Who Was Mary Anning?

Mary Anning was a pioneering palaeontologist who made some of the most important fossil discoveries in history. Working along the Jurassic Coast of England in the early 1800s, she uncovered creatures that had never been seen before — forever transforming our understanding of prehistoric life, extinction, and the history of our planet. At a time when women were barely recognised in science, her brilliance and determination changed the world.

What Will Children Explore?

During this exciting live session, children will:

  • Discover how fossils form over millions of years
  • Learn how scientists piece together extinct creatures from tiny fragments of bone
  • Explore ancient oceans, prehistoric food chains, and early climate change
  • Understand geological time and what rocks reveal about Earth’s past
  • Find out how carbon dating helps unlock secrets of the distant past
  • Celebrate the life and legacy of Mary Anning herself

Who Is This For?

This workshop is open to children and families of all ages — no prior science knowledge needed! It is the perfect opportunity to spark curiosity about science, history, and the natural world.

Your Workshop Leaders

The session will be led by Little House of Science teachers with backgrounds in biology and archaeology. They will guide children through an exciting and accessible journey of discovery — fossils, prehistoric life, and the incredible story of Mary Anning.
